  • Title: Strengthening ADHD Community Paediatric services through prescribing pharmacist integration: outcomes from a six month pilot programme

Abstract

Demand for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) services has increased significantly across the NHS, contributing to delays in assessment, prescribing, and medication review. This article describes the development, implementation, and outcomes of a six-month pilot integrating a prescribing pharmacist within a community paediatric ADHD service. The model demonstrated improvements in clinic efficiency, prescribing processes, patient experience, and inter-professional communication. Its success led to the continuation and expansion of the pharmacist role, offering a scalable and cost-effective approach to meeting rising service demands.

In June 2024, The pharmacist completed the Independent Prescribing qualification at the University of Hertfordshire, with a defined scope of practice in ADHD under the supervision of Specialist Nurse Following qualification, through discussions with the Lead Consultant, Dr Susan Ozer and the Chief Pharmacist Andrew Hood at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, opportunities were identified for closer integration between pharmacy and paediatric teams. Dr Ozer agreed to act as clinical supervisor, and together established a structured six-month pilot model supported by regular supervision and review meetings with senior pharmacy leadership.

The pilot initially focused on stable, non-complex patients under the care of the consultant paediatrician. The overarching aim was to improve clinical efficiency, streamline prescribing processes, and enhance patient support while preserving consultant time for complex assessments and cases requiring specialist oversight.
