Background: Down Syndrome is a genetic condition associated with delays in motor, cognitive, language, and behavioral development. Its incidence in Oman is substantially higher than global averages, placing long term demands on families. Beyond clinical management, caregivers are required to provide continuous home based developmental training while coping with significant psychosocial challenges. Although digital health solutions are increasingly central to modern healthcare delivery, caregivers of children with Down Syndrome often lack structured, technology based resources to support holistic care.
Objectives: This study aimed to assess the psychosocial burden and caregiving needs of parents of children with Down Syndrome in Oman and to develop a web based caregiver toolkit to support home based developmental skills training, behavior management, and caregiver well being.
Methods: A two phase study design was employed. Phase 1 involved a cross sectional needs assessment conducted among parents attending Down Syndrome clinics at health centers in the North Batinah Governorate, using convenience sampling. A total of 250 parents participated. Psychosocial burden was assessed using the Parental Stress Scale and the Zarit Caregiver Burden Interview, alongside evaluation of service satisfaction and caregiver needs. Ethical approval and informed consent were obtained. Findings from Phase 1 informed Phase 2, which focused on the development of a web based prototype.
Results: Caregivers reported moderate levels of parental stress and mild levels of caregiver burden, influenced by satisfaction with available therapeutic services. The needs assessment identified gaps in accessible resources for structured home based developmental training and limited psychosocial support. In response, a user friendly digital caregiver toolkit was developed, providing guidance on motor, cognitive, and behavioral development, behavior modification strategies, and caregiver self care.
Conclusion: This first national and regional initiative to develop a comprehensive digital support tool for caregivers of children with Down Syndrome aligns with Oman Vision 2040 and national health priorities. The web based toolkit has the potential to enhance caregiver support, strengthen community based care, improve child developmental outcomes, and promote caregiver resilience.
